Candidates Needed for Downtown Committee
The revitalization of downtown Yoakum will require the coordination of multiple interests with different and sometimes competing ideas. As a partner in the process, the Yoakum City Council moved to establish a citizen committee whose purpose is to review downtown-related municipal rules and regulations, to look at tools other communities have in place and to recommend to Council the adoption of those tools that could work for Yoakum.
An example of a municipal tool is the zoning overlay specific to downtown. A zoning overlay redefines future acceptable uses. For instance, an oil change shop is an acceptable commercial use on US Hwy 77A but it may not be the best future use of property downtown.
The Council is seeking members representing building owners, downtown businesses, chamber of commerce, city council and local residents. It is anticipated that the group will meet three or four times and make its report to City Council. For details interested parties should contact the Economic Development office at chuckdart@CityofYoakum.org or 361-293-6321 by February 2, 2018. The Council intends to make committee appointments at its February meeting.
