By Rail and Sea

The railroad plays a major role in Yoakum’s history and the Union Pacific Railroad is still a part of our city. Union Pacific Rail and U. S. Highway 77 run through Yoakum and connect with the Port of Victoria providing direct access to the Gulf of Mexico (also referred to as Gulf of America).

The Port of Victoria is a shallow-draft port, protected from hurricanes, serves as a gateway to domestic and international markets is connected to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway by a 35-mile barge canal.

The Port of Corpus Christi has become the nation’s largest energy export gateway and the third-largest export port for crude oil in the world. The Port boasts a 54-foot-deep channel, three Class I railroads—BNSF, CPKC, and UP—and a location adjacent to connecting Texas highways Interstate 37 and Highway 181.

The Houston Ship Channel complex and its more than 200 private and eight public terminals, collectively known as The Port of Houston, is the nation’s largest port for waterborne tonnage and an essential economic engine for the Houston region, the state of Texas, and the United States.

City of Yoakum Electric Utilities Department

The City of Yoakum Electric Department oversees the maintenance and operation of the municipally owned electric distribution system. The City purchases wholesale power from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and provides electricity to customers within the Yoakum city limits and the nearby community of Sweet Home.

In addition to system maintenance, the department is responsible for:

Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC)

Powers Yoakum’s Industrial Park II, also a provider of broadband. The Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC) is a progressive and responsive partner equipped for businesses small and large. It serves one of the largest clusters of commercial and industrial-based customers in the region. The GVEC Region covers 3,500 square miles across 13 counties in South Central Texas.
